For the past three years, the Wilkinsburg Sanctuary Project has partnered with various organizations to provide jobs for teens for six weeks during the summer. In a unique partnership with Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh, youth learn basic construction skills as they assist in rehabbing homes in the area for low-income senior, Veteran and disabled homeowners. Over the past two years, WSP also partnered with the Wilkinsburg Youth Project which was funded by the County’s Learn and Earn program to provide employment for up to 50 youth. The youth were divided into four working groups: the WSP construction crew, a media group, a mentoring group which worked in summer camp programs with children and a gardening group (which extended into our Teens and Greens program). The Wilkinsburg Sanctuary Project provides housing in local churches, connects the Wilkinsburg Youth Project with the community and hosts a closing program and celebration at the end of the summer.
